Military Academy Nominations

One of Congressman Strong’s favorite parts of representing Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District in D.C. is nominating North Alabama’s young men and women for an appointment to a United States military service academy.
Applying to a military service academy is a dual application process. Students must apply for a nomination from a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, Vice President, or the President, and apply to their academies of choice.
Students applying for a nomination from Congressman Strong must reside or be legally domiciled within the boundaries of Alabama’s 5thCongressional District.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be at least 17 years old, but not have passed the 23rd birthday; age limit is 25 years old for Merchant Marine Academy.
- Must be a U.S. citizen at the time he or she enters the Academy.
- Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
- Must meet the medical, physical, and academic requirements of the Academy to which he or she is applying.
Commitments
An appointment to an academy requires a nine-year commitment: four years of study and training at the academy followed by five years of active-duty military service.
To be considered for a nomination from Congressman Strong, you must have an open application with one or more of the academies.

- U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut *
*The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination for appointment.
Congressman Strong may nominate up to 15 individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district, with the exception of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy which only allows 10 nominations.
The deadline to submit a complete application to Congressman Strong's office is October 15.
