Representative Strong Introduces Legislation Promoting Patriotism in Public Schools

February 13, 2025

WASHINGTON— Representative Dale W. Strong (AL-05) introduced the “Promoting American Patriotism in Our Schools Act” to promote patriotism and civic responsibility.

“It is a shame to see how patriotism has taken a backseat in schools across the country. Unfortunately, many children in today’s society do not know the Pledge of Allegiance. The values and symbols that make America great are being overlooked and ignored. It’s time we change that,” said Rep. Dale Strong. “The ‘Promoting American Patriotism in Our Schools Act’ ensures that every child grows up understanding and appreciating our great nation, its symbols, and its history.”

This legislation requires all elementary and secondary schools receiving federal funding to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each school day, prominently display the United States flag in all classrooms and gymnasiums, and incorporate educational materials on the history, significance, and proper display of the American flag.

This bill is endorsed by 12 school districts within Alabama’s Fifth District: Madison City Schools, Huntsville City Schools, Madison County Schools, Athens City Schools, Limestone County Schools, Scottsboro City Schools, Jackson County Schools, Decatur City Schools, Hartselle City Schools, Morgan County Schools, Lawrence County Schools, and Lauderdale County Schools.

“I support and endorse the ‘Promoting American Patriotism in our Schools Act.’ By supporting this bill, we ensure that our students are reminded daily of the values to be respectful citizens who honor the legacy of those who have fought to protect our freedoms,” said Jackson County Schools Superintendent, Jason Davidson. “Not only will this be beneficial as American citizens, this bill will fulfill our Civics requirements from the state of Alabama.”

"Patriotism and civic responsibility are fundamental to fostering engaged and informed citizens. The ‘Promoting American Patriotism in Our Schools Act’ reinforces the values of respect, unity, and historical understanding that are essential for our students' development,” said Morgan County Schools Superintendent, Tracie Turrentine. “At Morgan County Schools, we are committed to instilling a sense of pride in our nation while ensuring that all students learn about the significance of the American flag and the principles it represents."

“We acknowledge and honor the sacrifices and patriotism of the men and women who gave us the opportunity to say the Pledge of Allegiance,” said Madison City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Ed Nichols. “In Madison City Schools, we currently have flags located in our classrooms and recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day.”

The Promoting American Patriotism in Our Schools Act’s original co-sponsors include Reps. Barry Moore (AL-01), Mike Rogers (AL-03), Robert Aderholt (AL-04), and Gary Palmer (AL-06), Mary Miller (IL-15), Mark Alford (MO-04), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), Andy Harris (MD-01), Joe Wilson (SC-02), Brian Babin (TX-36), Troy Downing (MT-02), and John Rose (TN-06).

“America is the greatest country in the world, and we should be teaching our children about the history that makes us great,” said Rep. Moore. “I thank my colleague, Rep. Strong, for leading on this legislation that promotes patriotism and civics in our schools.”

“I was proud to join my colleagues in supporting this legislation to bring patriotism back to our classrooms,” said Rep. Rogers. “For too long, the left has let their America-last agenda carry over into K-12 schools. This legislation is going to recover our children’s pro-America education, and we will ensure students learn that being an American is something to be proud of.”

"I am proud to co-sponsor the Promoting American Patriotism in Our Schools Act, introduced by my colleague Congressman Dale Strong,” said Rep. Aderholt. “This legislation underscores the importance of fostering national pride and civic responsibility in our young people. The American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance are powerful symbols of our shared values—liberty, unity, and commitment to this great nation. By ensuring their presence in our schools, we reinforce the foundational principles that have made our country strong. I stand in full support of this bill and its mission to instill a sense of patriotism in future generations."

“Under the previous administration, schools have become breeding grounds for liberal ideology and anti-American rhetoric,” said Rep. Palmer. “We must turn the page and ensure our schools encourage students to grow up loving their country, promote national unity, and understand the values that make our nation great. As President Reagan said, ‘Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.’ I’m thankful for Congressman Strong’s leadership on this issue.”
