Internships

A congressional internship provides a distinct perspective on the operations of a congressional office and the legislative process. In the District offices and Washington, DC office, internships are generally in the summer months and divided into three sessions: May to June, June to July, and July to August. There are also semester-long internships in the Fall and Spring in both our Washington, DC, and Huntsville, AL offices.
Interns’ responsibilities will vary. In the DC office, they may be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, lead tours of the U.S. Capitol for visitors from the Fifth District, attend hearings and briefings, and draft responses to constituent letters on various issues before the House. In the District Office, they will be asked to answer phones, help with fact-finding, assist with completing casework, and produce press releases. The duties may also expand to designing social media posts, drafting constituent letters, and creating a welcoming environment for all incoming constituents.
Office hours in both D.C. and the District are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Internship applicants should have completed one year of college and are required to secure housing. Keep in mind, that housing fills up quickly for the summer in Washington, D.C.
